Dalit tied to tree in Haryana, car rams him till he is dead, caste feud alleged

Chandigarh, Thu Apr 18 2013
The body of a 20-year-old Dalit youth, who reportedly died after some persons allegedly tied him to a tree and repeatedly rammed a car into him, was found in Devsar village of Haryana's Bhiwani district on Wednesday. His body was found abandoned in a car on the roadside between Devsar and Kusumbi villages.
The police said the youth, Jaimal, was murdered on Tuesday night. Crime scene investigation has revealed that he
was intoxicated, tied to a tree and then had a car repeatedly rammed into him till he died. The assailants dumped his body in the same car and then left it about 2 km away from the tree. Based on a complaint by Jaimal's father Rajpal, a case was registered against a few upper caste members living in the same village.
Rajpal told the police that last year, the upper caste members had attacked them and stopped Jaimal's wedding procession. They also did not allow Jaimal to sit on a elephant as part of the religious ceremony. Since then, he was being harassed by upper caste youths and hence, they could have killed him, Rajpal alleged in his complaint.
Jaimal's family learnt about his death on Wednesday morning. He had left home on Tuesday night saying that he was going out with friends. When he did not return, his parents looked for him throughout the night but to no avail.
Meanwhile, after an autopsy, the police handed over the body to the parents. The autopsy found presence of alcohol in Jaimal's blood and strangulation marks around his neck. Fatal injuries too were found on the body.
The Dalit community of Devsar has demanded stern action against the accused. Bhiwani SP Simardeep Singh said a case against two persons — one from the Scheduled Caste and another from the Rajput community — has been registered. The charges include murder and atrocities on SC/ST.
