RAJBIRAJ, Dec 31: As many as eight people, mostly belonging to the poor and Dalit communities, have died of cold in Saptari district over the last couple of weeks due to bitter cold, exacerbated by cold wave and dense fog, which has gripped much of the Tarai region.
On Sunday alone, three people, including a homeless woman, succumbed to cold, taking the death toll from cold to eight so far, according to the District Police Office (DPO).
A mentally-retarded woman, who was eking out a living by begging on the streets of Saptari, died of cold at Primary Health Post of Kanchanpur, according to the Area Police Office of Hanumannagar.
She was admitted by the locals to the health post after she started shivering with cold. As no one knows where she came from, her body was lying unclaimed at the health post till Monday.
On the same day, Mishri Lal Sada, 59, of Nengada-5, and Kishun Devi Khanga, 65, of Barmajhiya VDC, too, died of cold. Their family members told Republica that they were too poor to buy warm clothes to save themselves from chilling cold.
In the last two weeks, five more people, mostly elderly, have died of cold. They have been identified as Malati Marik of Nengada village, Dhanwanti Marik, 65, of Launiya-9, Raj Kumar Pariyar, 45, who had been living in Rupnagar, Bilat Chaudhary of Banarjhula-7 and Raghunathi Yadav of Raypur-9, according to the police.
SP Dinesh Amatya, Chief of the Saptari DPO, said that they have been arranging log fire in several parts of the district to help the shivering locals.
